Activism is about fighting for and moving America towards equality, of all sorts. Gender(expression also), sexuality, race, religion, etc. Things activism should do: make people think, encourage feelings of equality, peacefully rally people to support your cause; whatever it may be. Things activism shouldn't do: harm innocent people, give people an excuse to rob or "loot" businesses, make people cause physical damage to others property(including but not limited to breaking and entering, arson, and defacing property) and giving others a bad name.
You should not use someone else's name to justify your actions. My heart goes out to the Gray family and everyone else who was effected by this loss. One of the biggest tags I've seen trending via Facebook or Tumblr is #blacklivesmatter. If you disagree with the tag, it's your option to leave now. Nothing is more upsetting than when people aren't only discriminated against, but horrifically murdered for being that way. Being a poc does not in fact devalue any form of human right you have, nor you as a person. However acting in outrageous violent manners does. The Gray family themselves are very disgusted by what's happening, and that should speak a million words, but it doesn't. Instead you guys carry this name as an excuse to wreck havoc and destroy property. All in the name of black lives. What about all the other lives? the innocent ones? Do they not matter? How is beating up an middle aged man for a walk, or setting an elderly home on fire saving black lives?
You all say that riots are the only way to solve things. You can not say that and say you are a black rights activist at the same time. Everyone who says that is the only answer goes against everything MLK Jr. stood for. That's what he DIED for. And you know what? His peaceful protests changed history.
THAT is what being an activist is. It's not making people like my sister or friend afraid for their lives because the city is on lock down. It's not burning down and robbing innocent businesses who probably do in fact support the right for a rally. It's being able to evoke change in a way that matters. Not cause Ferguson, not causing Baltimore, or any other future riot to come.
Be the change you want to see in the world. No one wants to live in a constant state of violence, so don't provoke that change.
